Los AngelesLos Angeles, California was started in 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula translated as The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porciúncula. It was part of Mexico in 1821, after its independence from Spain. At the end of the Mexican-American War In 1848, Los Angeles and California were bought as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, becoming part of the United States; Mexico kept the Baja. It was incorporated as a city on April 4, 1850, five months later California became a state.


Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest in the United States. Also called L.A., it has an estimated population of 3.8 million within 469.1 square miles (1,214.9 square kilometers) in the Southern part of California.

Los Angeles is considered to have a Mediterranean weather pattern with mild and wet winters, and warm to hot summers. The south wind and the mountains to the north keep the city warm. Sea breezes keep the coastal areas cool in the summer and warmer in the winter. Summer daytime highs in downtown L.A. are 82°F, with nighttime lows of 63°F. Winter daytime highs are about 65°F, on average, with night lows of 48°F and rain is common. The warmest month is August, followed by July and then September.
