National World War II Memorial

World War II MemorialThe National World War II Monument celebrates the dedication and praises the success of those who were involved in World War II. Friedrich St.Florian’s winning design incorporates classical and modernist styles of architecture combines it with the true to nature and cultural surroundings, and ties together the heritage of the American Revolution and the United States Civil War.


The World War II Memorial praises the 16 million men and women who were in the armed forces of the United States, the over 4000,000 who lost their lives and those on the home front who supported the war. This memorial is a tribute to the spirit, self-sacrifice, and perseverance of the people of the U.S. WWII is the only 20th century event remembered on the National Mall’s central axis.

It is located in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall, on the previous location of the Rainbow Pool at the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, between the Washington Monument to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.

The construction began in September 2001. On April 29, 2004 it opened to the public, and President George W. Bush dedicated it on May 29, 2004, two days before Memorial Day. The memorial is managed by the National Park Service under its National Mall and Memorial Parks group.


Washington D.C. has a moderate climate representative of the Mid-Atlantic United States, with four separate seasons. Summer is very hot and humid with highs in July and August in the 80's to 90's. Because of the humidity there can be many thunderstorms, some with tornadoes. Spring and fall are very pleasant with low humidity and temperatures in the 60's to 70's. Many trees and bushes are in bloom, most notably the cherry blossoms. Winter can feature cold temperatures, snow and freezing rain and sometimes sizable snowstorms. Average highs are in the low 40's and lows in the mid 20's from mid-December to mid-February. The temperature can occasionally drop into the teens.
