National Mall & Memorial Parks

National Mall & Memorial ParksGovernment owned and managed parks in Washington D.C. go back to 1790, some of the oldest in the U.S. On October 4, 1924 the First Division Monument was the first memorial onstructed in Washington, D.C. to pay tribute to the soldiers who fought in World War I. The locations inside the National Mall & Memorial Parks gives visitors many possibilities to observe presidential history and to pay homage to the bravery and self-sacrifice of the veterans of war. In 1933 the areas were changed to the authority of the National Park Service.

These parks were known as the National Capital Parks from their beginning until 1965.
