Seattle

Seattle, WashingtonSeattle in the state of Washington is between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. It is 96 miles (154 km) south of the Canada and is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest. Although inhabited for about 4,000 years by Native Americans, the first European settlement did notcame until the mid-19th century. The city was named Seattle in 1853, but from 1869 until 1982, it was called Queen City. Its nickname is Emerald City for the evergreen trees in the area.

Dallas

Dallas, TexasDallas, Texas was established in 1841 and became a city on February 2, 1856. Over 300 years ago the first Europeans came to the Texas area. Soon groups of people from Mexico, Europe and the United States followed. Mexico became free from Spain in 1821, and the location known as Texas became part of the United States of Mexico. Texas broke from Mexico in 1836 and joined the United States of America in 1846 after being independent for 10 years. During the Civil War Texas joined the Confederacy, however, except for that brief time, Texas has been a state for more than 150 years.

Atlanta

Atlanta,  GeorgiaOn December 21, 1836 the Georgia General Assembly voted to start the Western and Atlantic Railroad for a trade route to the Midwest. The area around the eastern part to the line became settled first. By 1842, the area had six buildings and a population of 30 and was renamed "Marthasville". After a few renames, the Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad, J. Edgar Thomson, made a suggestion that the town be renamed "Atlantica-Pacifica", which was then shortened to "Atlanta". The citizens approved, and the town was incorporated as "Atlanta" on December 29, 1847.

Miami

Miami, Florida at dusk

In 1836 Fort Dallas was built in the area of Miami, Florida, although the area had been inhabited for over a thousand years by Native Americans and later by the Spanish. The city was incorporated on July 28, 1896. Miami grew into a large city during the land boom in the 1920's. Today, Miami is a major city in southeastern Florida, and has over 404,048 residents. Miami is the largest city within the South Florida metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the Southeastern United States with 5.5 million people. Miami and the area around makes up the fifth-largest urban area in the U.S.
